Hi, everyone! I'm just dropping a quick note on this brilliant system to introduce myself, since I have a moment to myself and I've found a computer to play around on. My name is Xi'an Coy Manh, and I'm your new librarian, starting as of now. I've been browsing these journals a bit, and I see you've all had a very eventful summer -- Cecilia was kind enough to explain some things to me (I think she was actually trying to shock me, but I'm pretty hard to shock ;).

Please call me Shan; being called Miss anything gives me hives. I understand things here have been a bit hectic lately, so I am sorry for arriving unexpectedly, but I wanted to see the state of the library before your classes started, and become aquainted with this lovely house so I don't get too lost when things get busy. I'm looking forward to meeting all of you; I'll probably be wandering around blissfully for the next few days, so feel free to say hi if you want to. (I'll also be taking book requests once I've figured out what we already have.)

You'll probably be seeing me around, and there are two other faces you'll likely turn up -- Leong and Nga are twins, nine, and looking for something to do after spending a few days in the van with me. (If they break anything, let me know.) They're good kids, although slightly rambunctious, and very friendly.

(Angelo, thank you so much for your help this afternoon. I don't know how I managed to accumulate that much stuff over the years, but you were much appreciated -- as was the rundown on the mansion. If I can make it up to you, let me know.)

My dagger is in a locked box, and will not be leaving it until I get a lockable display case for it. I suspect the same can apply to the rest of us with weaponry from our 'field trip' to Asgard a few weeks ago. Most of us anyway.

yeah, but I USE mine, pretty much every day. and I'd need one hell of a big lockbox for them.

I mean, the katana alone is over 3ft!!

That is a lot of steel. Mine was just a hair over two feet, but it was simply a sword. Which reminds me, I miss that sword. I should replace it someday.

I wonder if you could get some sort of locker that might double as a display case?

hmmm...maybe. I would need something practical and able to hold 5 blades... maybe Nathan would have some ideas.

next hobby is going to be SMALL. like stamps.

They make locking display and storage cabinets for rifles, yes? I would think that the same might be true for swords.

I think they do, never had much use for guns. but I'm sure they have to, to keep them away from kids.

Well, it stands to reason that they might make them for swords too. The stores display them that way, yes?

Like Angie said, there are alternatives.

In fact, we could get you something similar to what I have in my office, but not as high tech. There are some options: call various martial arts places and see what they suggest. Modify a gun display case. Something along those lines.

If you want to see what I have in my office, feel free to come down and I'll show you.

No, it's actually the metallic gun closet I have in my office, that holds my hunting rifles.

Narcolepsy and guns. Yeah, doc, that's a -great- combination. Match made in heaven.

Cain, she's not narcoleptic. Neither am I. There have got to be any number of better things you can expend good grousing-energy on. Go find them.

Really, Nate. He's at loose ends with the renovations done. He's got to put his mind to something challenging.

Yeah, the Professor sorted me out with a lockbox for my sword. I should see about getting a display case for it, though, actually, it's a shame to hide it away like that.

At this rate, maybe we can purchase them in bulk?

Not a bad idea, actually. Let's see - there's yours, mine, Clarice's many, Shiro's and Manuel's if they're not already locked up...

Anyone else?

Doug has a sword and a dagger. I do not know if Jamie has a dagger, and he has that staff. Paige probably has something, though I do not remember what.

It might even be cheaper just to get one big one or something, and a key for each of us.

Not so much a dagger as an eating knife, and Gunnar was very clear on the difference--you don't stab people with your eating knife unless you have to, it's unsanitary.

Also, let's see, a hatchet, a prybar, a utility hammer, and a letter opener that was trying to be a knife except I messed up making it. Letter opener's on my desk, tools are in a lockbox under my bed, and I screwed some brackets into the wall above my armor stand for the staff, only it gets lonely, or something, because I keep finding it up my sleeve.

My dagger is -technically- an eating knife. If only because there were only so many sharp things I was going to learn how to poke holes in someone with.

Your staff gets lonely? Are you sure you have just not developed kletptomania in your sleep?

Heh. Dwarves are very, very big on the right tool for the right job. I mean, look at my eating knife. Maybe a four-inch blade, one edge, not much more point than you really need to skewer a bite of food and get it into your mouth, decent steel but nothing special, and there's some bevel on the blunt side that makes it good for spreading things you need to spread.

Now, a "dagger," to the dwarves, was something like Disa fights with two of. Foot-long blade maybe two inches wide, top-quality weaponsteel, a point that means business and two edges you could shave with except, as previously noted, they don't. Kinda like what a Bowie knife has nightmares about, really. And it's tough to mix the two up, side by side.

And unless I've developed kleptomania in the middle of the afternoon when I'm about a mile away from my room, then no, I pretty much think it's getting lonely. At least it ends up in my sleeve, instead of full-size, which could get embarrassing. :)

Someday, someone is going to go back and look at these journal entries and be very, very afraid of all of us. You just wrote three paragraphs on knives, Jamie.

...

If the edge was sharp enough to shave with, why didn't you trim your beard?

Two paragraphs on knives. One paragraph on my wandering quarterstaff. I guess that isn't much better, though is it?

Well, two reasons. One was, like I said earlier, the dwarves take a really dim view of shaving. As for the other one, maybe you need to go back and reread my description? They were a foot long! And I'd say I didn't know where they'd been except that I do, and even though she was really good about cleaning them afterward I would have felt weird about asking if I could borrow her troll-disembowelling knives so I could scrape my face with them.
